Fontainebleau

If you’ve already been to Versailles, maybe you’d like to visit the original royal castle?  It’s called Fontainebleau and fairly easy to access by train from the Gare de Lyon (on your way back, have a drink or dinner at Le Train Bleu).  Fontainebleau is not as modern as Versailles of course, but the rooms are quite magnificent.  The property is immense and you can spend the afternoon walking the gardens.  They also do visits (guided only) to the smaller living quarters so if you’re interested in this, you need to be there at 9:30 to sign up (you cannot reserve in advance, only on site).
