Saint-Denis, Museum of Art & History

I went to the Basilica of Saint Denis, a church I absolutely love, this week.  There’s an art exhibition of royal robes on display that I had wanted to see.  The town of Saint Denis is usually not on the top of people’s list to visit.  Likely its reputation as a hotbed of discontent and population of North Africans throws most people off.  And certainly more so since the November 13 attacks.  At any rate, I was told at the church that I could have a discount on other cultural sites in the area if I wanted to go.  And off I sent to the Museum of Art and History of Saint Denis.

It was absolutely one of the most astounding places I’ve come across in the Paris area.  The building has had several purposes but it’s main one for years was as a convent that was founded by one of Louis XV’s daughters.  Today, it’s room after room of artifacts from the convent, all the artifacts from the archaeological digs of the cathedral of Saint Denis, an entire floor dedicated to the Paris Commune, a tragic event in Paris history, as well as the interesting collection of letters and personal affects of Paul Eluard, who was born in Saint Denis.

If you’re already visiting the cathedral, please take the extra 10 minute walk to visit this marvelous museum.  If you’re lucky enough to be here during the warmer months, a pretty garden awaits you as well.
