There’s much more to Versailles than the big over the top chateau.  There’s also the gardens, the two palaces of  Trianon and Marie Antoinette’s estate and hamlet (it’s a working farm).  You should plan to spend your whole day out here.  There are very decent restaurants on site down by the grand canal and you can rent bikes and golf carts to speed things up.

But if you’ve visited the chateau already or if you want to modify the day a bit, think about visiting the town itself.  Stop by the tourist office near the RER C station on the corner of Avenue de Paris and General Charles de Gaulle for a map of the town.  There are beautiful old markets, churches, stables, Madame Elisabeth’s estate and the Jeu de Paume where the Revolution was born.
